Mission Statement

The Innovation Lab is an integrated employment and business development center that provides local job seekers access to career training and job placement services while also acting as a resource to local businesses by providing recruitment and business planning support, spurring business growth. 

The Innovation Lab is run by a public-private partnership that includes Industry City, New York City College of Technology and nonprofit groups including: Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, Brooklyn Workforce Innovations, and Center for Family Life.

The Innovation Lab at Industry City offers a range of career, training, and business services.

Our Impact

The mission of the Innovation Lab Partners is to support the growth of innovation economy jobs on the Brooklyn working waterfront in Industry City, Sunset Park, and surrounding communities. Our approach is to invest in local human capital through job training, education, job placement and support services, with the goal of connecting the local community to new opportunities, and supporting business growth through educational workshops, recruitment services, and business planning support.

Plan for Growth Series

Plan for Growth is a 10-week business development program for small manufacturers. The program, funded by JP Morgan Chase + Co, guides participants in developing and implementing a new and individualized Plan for Growth. Participants will explore effective ways to move from a startup mentality and to a long-term vision of sustainable growth.

The Plan for Growth course covers an array of essential and timely topics such as accounting, human resource management, capital, supply chains, distribution, the digital space, marketing and branding, leadership, organizational culture, and more!

SBIDC has graduated 54 businesses over the last 3 years. Since graduating, alumni have reported a 25% increase in revenue, a 24% increase in total jobs, and an average starting wage of $19 per hour. For 2019, SBIDC has set a goal of 75% of participants being women, minority and veteran-owned small businesses.

Business Workshops

The New York City College of Technology Small Business Development Center offers small businesses and entrepreneurs free workshops and training to ensure businesses are prepared for startup, growth or expansion. Workshops are on a variety of topics including business start up basics, financial projections, business planning and more. If you or your business reside in New York, the SBDC can maneuver you around the obstacles to success.

Free Job Placement Assistance:

The Innovation Lab offers weekly orientation sessions for the public to learn about employment opportunities with businesses located at Industry City and on the Sunset Park waterfront. Must be 18 years or older and bring an updated resume and valid ID. Weekly information sessions every Tuesday at 10am.

Educational & Training Services


The Innovation Lab offers multiple training opportunities with different partners and programs. For information on training programs, please visit industrycity.com/innovation-lab.


The TechSTART program will immerse participants into the world of modern digital technology by providing the opportunity to develop in-demand computer programming and coding skills. By participating in the program, participants will: cultivate critical thinking skills, learn to design websites, and achieve technological literacy.

Participants will learn various programming languages such as HTML, CSS, GIT, introduction to JavaScript, JQuery, Mobile response, PHP and MYSQL. Students will demonstrate their understanding of newly learned material by building their own website for small business, nonprofits, and community organizations. Additionally, participants will also learn to create visual content using Adobe Photoshop and earn the Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud certification at the culmination of the program.

Upon completion of the 12-week program, participants will receive assistance with job placement assistance, advanced training and/or support with college admittance.

  • Must have their high school diploma or equivalency (TASC or GED)

  • Must be eligible to work in the US

US Citizenship/ESOL Exam Classes – City Tech

These free classes are available to lawful permanent U.S. residents to prepare for the citizenship application process, interview and test. The classes are for intermediate and advanced level English students.


  • Must be 18 Years or older
  • Must be a permanent U.S resident for at least 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S citizen)
  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand basic English

Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI)

Offers free training programs and other resources to help low-income New Yorkers build sustainable careers. BWI offers training programs in range of areas: low-voltage cable installation, woodworking, janitorial services, security, food handling, production assistance, CDL, and more.

Educational classes and citizenship classes also available, please call to confirm classes are open and recruiting.

Commercial Driver’s License Training for ESL - BWI

Learn the language and driving skills necessary to pass the CDL exam. The program offers classroom-based and behind-the-wheel training leading to a NYS Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Upon completion of program, graduates of gain access to employment opportunities as drivers of school buses, trucks and paratransit vehicles through Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI) .


  • Must have a valid driver’s license for at least 23 years with no more than 4 points
  • Must be a legal resident of New York

Food Industry Job Training- BWI

This free training program will help you earn certification in food preparation and handling and prepare you for a career in the food industry. Graduates will be ready to take on a role in food production or manufacturing, commercial kitchens, entry-level baking, food retail, and more.

Participants will obtain instruction in:

  • NYC Food Handler’s License
  • Basic knife handling and baking skills
  • Knowledge of kitchen machinery and tools
  • Basic math, including weights and measurement
  • Resume and interview skills


  • Must be 18 Years or older
  • Pass a basic math and reading exam
